Unplugged title Breakdown Part 2 // January 18, 2010
wow, this tutorial stuff is more time consuming than I expected… i have greatest respect for guys like John, Andrew and Nick ;) anyways, here is the second part of the unplugged title breakdown, where we take a closer look at the after effects work. so basically the compositing of the cinema 4D passes and the creation of the look. At the end of this HOWTO i will give you a brief heads up on the upcoming tutorial series. Critique and comments are welcome again, of course.

OMG you are pro:D
Great vid
Hi Robert,
THanks very much for your AE breakdown here .. very cool to see the attention to detail and covering off things like the color grading.
I notice you have a few different shots at the start .. is there a technique or system that you use to match the colors between the shots … What I mean is .. because you’re working on each shot individually is there a way that you can put on shot side by side with another shot and then tweak the grade until you’re happy that they are similar?
Or do you play your main comp and then jump back and forth between the main comp and the individual shots making color adjustments as required?
Sorry . .it’s probably a basic question . .I’m just a bit new to AE.
Cheers
Mark
It seems you are starting to like these tuturials. Well done, nice to see your workflow and good to see the breakdown of your title opener.
best,
hugo
hey mark,
in this case i did it just by scrubbing back and forth in the timeline. when you work very intensely on a project for some hours, you start getting a feeling for the colour. also, by reusing the same solids and/or cc-effects on equally lit and shaded 3D-passes again and again, you are somewhat secured that you end up with a matching result.
but your question still is interesting: can you view different shots (that are in one mastercomp and therefore connected in time) next to each other without some creazy workaround like timefreezing or such? has someone an idea?
Hi Robert, I’m not sure if this is the answer you and Mark are looking for but in AE you can take a snapshot of a frame with the camera button in the bottom of the viewer panel and then go somewhere else, for example another comp, and preview your snapshot simply holding down F5. Hope this helps
And ofcourse congratz on winning the challenge! Your tuts are great, too
Oh, and let me just add that when you have taken your snapshot, you can then view the same comp in 2 views and when you hold F5 the snapshot shows up only on the selected/active viewport. Maybe not the perfect solution but probably the easiest one that I can think of right now
hey JIK,
thanks for sharing this tip! i just tried it and it’s very useful. i always thought this snapshot function only worked _within_ one comp, but this is obviously not the case. very cool!
rOBERT, WOULD YOU MIND SHARING YOUR SYSTEM SPECS? gREAT WORK MAN! kEEP IT UP!!!
hey phil,
at home i’m using an imac 2.8 ghz intel core 2 duo with 3 gb ram.
at the office i’m working with a mac pro 2 x 2.26 ghz quad-core iinte xeon with 16 gb ram.
now guess, where working is more fun ;)
